Skye Bridge

Bridge

Skye Bridge is a striking cantilever bridge that connects the Isle of Skye to the mainland of Scotland. Spanning across the sea, it offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including the rugged coastline and the dramatic mountains of the Isle of Skye.

Photographers will find a variety of subjects to capture, from the bridge itself to the breathtaking scenery that envelops it. The best light for photography is often during sunrise or sunset when the sky is painted with vibrant colours, providing a stunning backdrop against the bridge's silhouette.

Photography notes:

  • Arrive early to secure a good vantage point and take advantage of the golden hour light.
  • Consider using a wide-angle lens to capture both the bridge and the expansive landscape.
  • Explore different angles from both sides of the bridge for varied compositions.

Most visitors arrive at Skye Bridge via the A87, which leads directly to the bridge connecting the Isle of Skye to the mainland. The area is popular among photographers due to its dramatic scenery and the striking architecture of the bridge itself.

Parking:

  • The nearest parking option is at the car park located on the mainland side of the bridge, approximately 200 metres away. This car park provides easy access to the bridge and surrounding viewpoints.
  • Alternatively, there are lay-bys along the A87 where you can park, but these may require a short walk (up to 10 minutes) to reach the bridge, depending on your chosen spot.

Access:

  • The paths leading to the bridge are well-maintained, with paved surfaces on the mainland side, making it accessible for photographers with camera kits. However, the terrain can be uneven on some approaches, especially if you venture towards the water’s edge for different angles.
  • There are no significant restrictions in the area; however, be mindful of any signs indicating private land or no access zones, particularly along the coast.
  • Practical tips for photographers include arriving early to secure the best vantage points, especially during the golden hour at sunrise or sunset. A wide-angle lens is recommended to capture both the bridge and the expansive landscape. Exploring different angles from both sides of the bridge can yield varied compositions, enhancing your photographic portfolio.

Safety considerations include being aware of the tides if you intend to photograph near the water, as well as keeping an eye out for livestock in the surrounding fields.
