The Strid

River

The Strid is a dramatic section of the River Wharfe, located within the picturesque surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Known for its narrow, rocky passages and stunning natural beauty, this area is a popular spot for both hikers and photographers seeking to capture the essence of the British countryside.

Photographers will find a wealth of subjects at The Strid, including the rushing waters of the river, the unique rock formations, and the lush greenery that frames the scene. Early morning or late afternoon light can create beautiful reflections and enhance the vibrant colours of the landscape, particularly during autumn when the foliage is at its most striking.

Photography notes:

  • Consider using a polarising filter to reduce glare from the water and enhance colours.
  • Bring a sturdy tripod for long exposure shots of the flowing water.
  • Explore different angles along the riverbank for varied compositions, especially during the golden hour.

Most visitors arrive at The Strid by car, taking in the scenic drive through the Yorkshire Dales. The area is well-loved for its natural beauty, making it a favoured spot for both local and visiting photographers.

Parking:

  • The nearest parking option is the National Trust Car Park at Bolton Abbey, located approximately 3 miles from The Strid. From the car park, it's about a 30-minute walk (1.5 miles) along well-maintained paths through the woods and along the riverbank to reach the main photo spot.
  • Alternatively, there is roadside parking available along the B6160 near the entrance to The Strid, but this is limited and can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. A short walk (approximately 10 minutes) will lead you to the river's edge.

Access:

  • The paths leading to The Strid are generally well-defined but can be uneven and rocky, so sturdy footwear is essential. Watch for muddy sections, especially after rain, which can make some areas slippery.
  • The Strid is situated within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which means it is Open Access land, allowing for free movement, but be mindful of any local signage indicating private land or conservation areas.
  • Photographers should consider timing their visit for early morning or late afternoon for the best light, but be aware that the area can get busy during peak tourist seasons. Winter visits may provide unique atmospheric conditions but can also present challenges with icy paths.
  • Safety is paramount; be cautious near the riverbanks as the currents can be strong, and there are steep drops in certain areas. Livestock may be present in surrounding fields, so keep a respectful distance. Always check local conditions before setting out, particularly if planning to shoot near the water’s edge.
