Ross Castle

Most visitors to Ross Castle arrive by car, often making their way through Killarney National Park to enjoy the scenic route. The castle is well-signposted, making it relatively easy to find.

Parking:

• The nearest parking option is the Killarney National Park car park, located approximately 1.5 miles from Ross Castle. The walk from the car park to the castle takes about 30 minutes along a well-maintained path.
• Another option is to park at the designated lay-by along Ross Road, which is closer (about a 10-minute walk), but spaces can be limited, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Access:

• The path from both parking options to Ross Castle is predominantly flat and paved, making it accessible for photographers with camera gear. However, some sections may become muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
• There are no gates or stiles along the main route, allowing for smooth access to the castle grounds. However, it's important to be cautious around the lakeside, as the terrain can be uneven in certain areas.
• Ross Castle is located within Killarney National Park, which is Open Access land. Photographers are free to explore the grounds and surrounding areas, but it’s recommended to respect any signage related to wildlife or conservation efforts.
• Arriving early is highly recommended for the best light and to avoid crowds, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the reflections on the lake are most striking. Be mindful of seasonal changes, as autumn offers vibrant foliage that enhances the castle's backdrop.
